Where children come first

Text Box: Little Stars Childcare

What is a childminder?

Childminder’s are self-employed and decide their own working hours and conditions. They look after children in their own home either with the childminder’s own children or with other supervised children.

If a childminder looks after children under the age of 8, for more than 2 hours a day for reward or money, they MUST register with OFSTED (Office for Standards in Education) and their local authority.  The childminder must register unless the child is related to the childminder.

The childminder will also be required to set up policies and procedures, which are incorporated into a contract, which is drawn up and followed by everyone involved with the care of the child.

Childminder’s are allowed to look after a maximum of 6 children with no more than 3 pre-school at any one time. A low ratio of children to adults allows a lot of individual attention for children in a home-based setting with small groups involving stimulating play, outings and activities.

Why choose a childminder?

Registered childminder’s are committed to offering high quality play and learning opportunities to children in their care and have access to a toy library to help with this. All registered childminders have undergone basic training and most are continuing with further training to help understand children’s physical emotional and educational needs.

Flexibility

Most childminders are very flexible and can offer full or part-time care. They can collect children from school/nursery and offer care for older siblings. A childminder who needs to use a vehicle will ensure they have appropriate insurance and permission from the parents /guardians.

Safety Checks

All registered childminders will be inspected annually by OFSTED. The childminders home will be checked that it is safe for children. Any person over the age of 16 in the household will have to be police cleared to ensure they are “fit persons” to be around children. Childminders must have appropriate public liability insurance. Any childminder who provides overnight care will agree to have a fire inspection at  their premises.
